23. Molly

“You hit my sister!”

Molly walked into the sheriff’s station and found her brother struggling with Henry, his arms wrapped tightly around him. Scout stood in the jail cell next to Sophie, who was on the ground at his feet. Chairs and anything not nailed down were scattered throughout the room like a bull had made a circuit and vanished.

“Let go of me!”

“Calm down, Henry!” Mark said. “Let’s figure this out.”

Scout knelt beside Sophie. The look on his face was enough to know that something awful had taken place and that he blamed himself.

“Get away from her!” Henry screamed and broke out of Mark’s restraint. He vaulted over the counter and dashed inside the cell. Scout retreated into a corner as Henry followed, fists lifted in rage.

Scout held his hands up. “Henry, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to. I’m sorry.”

The muscles in Henry’s back bunched, and Molly felt certain that Scout was about to get pummeled, but Henry unclenched his fists, and his shoulders slumped. He turned back to his sister, who was lying on the floor, and dropped to the floor beside her, his legs crossed. He pulled her head into his lap and stroked her hair. There was a red streak across her cheek. Scout slid down the corner to the ground. Tears filled his eyes, but he quickly covered his shame.

Molly stepped all the way inside the building and closed the door. Mark turned his haggard face toward her, and he had a strange look of stress and fading madness. He wiped away the expression, and exhaustion remained.

“Hey,” he said to Molly.

“Hey back. What happened?”

Mark uprighted a chair and fell on it hard. Molly waited for the wood to collapse. Her brother had visible scrapes and blemishes on his face and knuckles.

Mark looked back at the cell. Then he sighed, returning his troubled eyes to his sister. She gripped the door handle to steady herself.

“Mark, you’re scaring me. Did you get into a fight?”

“We did. I don’t even know why. One minute Scout and I were talking. Then just like that…” Mark shook his head like a bad memory needed to be rattled out and left somewhere other than in his thoughts.

“Then what?” Molly asked.

He stared at her with dead eyes, void of anything left to give, information or otherwise. She entered the room and laid a hand on his shoulder. Her twin reached up and grasped it like he needed something real to hold on to. She kissed the top of his head and then left his side, rounded the counter, and entered the jail cell.

Henry looked up at Molly. Molly had never met them until yesterday in the schoolyard, but she had some recollection from Margaret’s time with Sophie, how she had suffered under Famine’s control. Such innocence lost, Margaret had wanted to help her through the darkness and into the light again.

Molly sat next to Henry on the cold floor. She wanted to comfort Scout, but that would have to wait.

“Do you know what’s going on with her?” Henry asked.
